Mobile First indexing means that in future Google will use mobile version content for indexing and ranking and those who don’t have those will lose rank and indexing which they have made till date.
Earlier Google used Desktop URL’s for Indexing when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query. This process came in action because of the majority of users are accessing Google through a mobile device, therefore index will primarily use the mobile version of a page's content.
In general Google Bot crawls and Indexes pages with the smartphone agent, therefore they will be able to continue to show the URL which is more appropriate for the users.
Google go through all the website slowly and eventually to ensure good experience for site owners and users we evaluate each site individually on its readiness for mobile-first indexing.
What's Changing?

Make sure you have the correct rel=canonical and rel=alternate link elements between your mobile and desktop versions.
